Tributyrin (also named as Glyceryl tributyrate; Glycerol tributyrate; Glyceryl tributyrate) is a kind of short-chain fatty acid ester with the chemical formula C15H26O6, CAS RN:60-01-5, Molecular weight:302.36,a white oily liquid,almost odorless, with a slight fatty aroma. It is easily soluble in ethanol, chloroform, and ether, but extremely insoluble in water (0.010%),it is natural product exist in cow fat.
Tributyrin is short chain fatty acid formed by the esterification of butyric acid and glycerol. They are stable and rapidly absorbing precursor substances of butyric acid, and their digestion mechanism in animals is similar to that of lipids. The triglycerides that enter the intestine are hydrolyzed into glycerol monoester and two butyric acids by pancreatic lipase, and butyric acid is quickly absorbed by the small intestine and enters the bloodstream.
